"Dark Side Has No Gravity" - The concept
Since the initial idea, in July of 2007, the title of the album has changed 3 times: "Phat as Phunk", "Encoded", "Space Capsule" and the last one and final, "Dark Side Has No Gravity". The sound concept was always the same but the main title changed according to some parameters: the mood of the recordings selected to be in the album (also changed in time), the main concept in the song titles, the start of the label (as it is the first release of the Speaker Blower Records) and also the selected picture for the cover. I selected a beautiful picture by a friend of mine, Mário Costa, a real artist of the image. As soon as I saw it for the first time, I understood that it was it! Note that the colour of the picture you see here is not the real one. It was tweaked to match this website colours. Click in it to see a sample of the real colours.
About the sound... My main idea was to creat an album where I could express all my feelings about drum´n´bass: the energy, the impact, the movement, the pressure, the musicality,... I also wanted to create a global atmosphere like the short films... I mean, the kind of films that finish very widely and make you think of a logical explanation for the story you´ve just watched, but it is very different than your girlfriend´s explanation... and both are valid... If you listen to the album from start to finish you´ll know what I mean...
Then, I really decided to start the first d´n´b label in Portugal and contacted the best producers/Mc in this country. As the number of members in the label started growing, I decided to make a collaboration track with each one of them. Although some are minor collaborations (basically because the lack of time - we all work and/or study), all of them are from the best and most talented d´n´b producers/dj/mc from Portugal and I wanted to have their touch (big or small) in the first release of my label, our sister company, Speaker Blower Records.
I didn´t want to put slow and/or atmospheric tunes in this album. They don´t match the label and with 5 collaborations, an Intro and an Outro there´s only 8 tracks left and there´s no space for slow tracks! I decided to create an energetic album but very different from track to track, although all of them are ... hmm... dark style, so to speak. I created about 25 tracks, worked really hard each day in every one of them (I was working in the audio post production of "Mundo Catita at the same time"). In the end, one by one, I removed the most problematic/not fitting tunes (by mix or by music style) and that´s how I got the final track selection. Then, it was only the decision of the track order... Some of these unreleased tracks are available for listen in my personal website (www.drsbr.net). Some of these tunes are kept for live/exclusive sets and won´t be released at all.
